Inspiration can be found nearly everywhere. All it takes is a mind that is receptive to new ideas. One of the places one can find inspiration for interior design ideas is in the movies we all know and love. Movie makers, after all, go through great pains to achieve a certain visual look in their movies. Well designed, well thought out settings help directors and cinematographers to tell their stories. So, in that sense they are like our patrons who carefully think about where they will place items like an Eileen Gray table or other modern classic furniture pieces. Here are some movies that we find inspiring when it comes to interior design.
- Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961): Set in New York, this iconic film stars the legendary Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly. Her apartment is decorated in the Bohemian style. It is minimalistic and uses mostly neutral tones. It also makes heavy use of unusually placed, odd items such as a box crate table.
- The Great Gatsby (1974): This film (later remade in 2013) stars Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. It is a treasure trove of ideas for anyone who loves the look of the 1920s.
- Beetlejuice (1988): One could not find a more playful, and frankly more macabre, set of design ideas than there are in this movie. Tim Burton’s supernatural comedy is bound to inspire the absurdist in anyone.
- American Psycho (2000): Christian Bale’s apartment in this movie is filled with classic furniture pieces and uses mostly black and white tones. It even features Mies van der Rohe Barcelona chairs. (This is a piece we proudly carry at Bauhaus2YourHouse).
- Under the Tuscan Sun (2003): Are you enamored of classic Italian villas? The movie provides a wealth of ideas for anyone who loves that rustic style.
- Down with Love (2003): This movie, which stars Renée Zellweger, is about a feminist (Barbara Novak) and her romance with Ewan McGregor. Zellweger’s apartment features bright colors (mostly pink) and modern furniture pieces.
So you see inspiration is truly all around us. It is in the movies we watch, the paintings we view and the places we go. And although this list is in no way exhaustive, it is a pretty good start for anyone who is looking for ideas to decorate his/her apartment or even office. Fortunately, at Bauhaus2YourHouse, we have a multitude of styles and furniture pieces representing many design movements.
