5 Interior Design Tips for Small Spaces

Designing a small space can come with unique challenges, but it doesn’t have to keep you from achieving the style and comfort you’ve always wanted. With the right interior design tips and tricks, you can transform your small space into a cozy and functional home that reflects your personality and taste.

1. Utilize Mirrors

To make the most out of the natural lighting in your small space, you’ll find a lot of value in adding mirrors. This can brighten up a room and bounce around the light that does enter to make the room appear bigger, even when it’s not. Not to mention, they’re also a practical accessory themselves.

To be most effective, place a mirror on the wall opposite the biggest window in the room. Find mirrors with frames that complement the style in the rest of your room, and don’t be afraid to play with different shapes, sizes, and styles to add further depth and intrigue.

2. Use Folding Furniture Pieces

When you’re dealing with a small room, you need to conserve the floor space and keep the area clear as much as possible. Because of this, you may want to seek out furniture pieces that can easily fold up and be stowed away, or are multi-functional.

Nowadays, it seems like our spaces play many different roles, from home office, to dining room, and entertaining space. So, look for furniture pieces that have many functions, or can be simply stored away without adding looking too clunky.

3. Choose a Cohesive Style

Another great design tip for small spaces is to choose one style for the whole area and stick with it. Not only will this make the room look professionally designed and sleek, but it also is pleasing to the eye and makes the room feel cozy and put-together rather than stuffy and cluttered.

This is a great idea if you’re decorating a studio apartment or another small space that is multi-functional. Carry your chosen design style across the whole area to create a sense of order and intentionality, even in a smaller room.

4. Think Vertically

If you feel like you’re running out of floor space, take advantage of the square footage of your walls or ceiling! This can be a great place to add decor items like paintings, plants, clocks, or accent pieces. Plus, you can add floating shelves, floating desks, and other practical pieces of furniture that add value and functionality to your room.

Additionally, if you place items on your walls or hang them from the ceiling, you will naturally draw the eyes up, making the room appear bigger than it is.

5. Avoid Clutter

If you’ve ever heard the phrase “less is more”, then you know how this concept can apply to designing a small space. Similar to some of the above tips, nothing makes a small room seem even smaller than stuffing it full of furniture, accessories, and other items.

This doesn’t mean you have to take a completely minimalist approach to decorating a small room. But, you should be conscious of each piece you add so as not to overwhelm it. With more open space, your room will seem bigger and offer more utility and function.
